A Neurodiversity Affirmative Approach for High-Masking Autistic Adults

As autism research has increased in recent years, especially regarding non-male presentations, the public has been gaining greater access to information about less-obvious presentations of autism. This has led to increasing numbers of adults realizing that they have this neurotype. Adults living with late-diagnosis, (self-identified or formally diagnosed) less-obvious autism face unique challenges:

  • Integrating autism identity with sense of self and relation of self with others and with social and political systems

  • Reframing life-narrative through this new lens

  • Developing approaches to balance authenticity and accommodation of nervous-system needs with socio-cultural and economic demands

  • Self-advocacy

  • Body attunement and nervous system regulation with exploration of limitations

In our therapy work together, we will explore and cultivate the above, through a strength-based and trauma-informed approach.
